Gail Werner Photography bio picture

Welcome to my Blog!

Gail Werner is a central Indiana wedding and portrait photographer.
Here’s where she tells you she likes the feel of the ocean and the
taste of champagne. Oh wait …

Truth is, she does love the ocean (when she can make it to a
coast!), but what she loves more is documenting the lives of her
clients — big days, little moments, they all carry meaning and deserve
to be captured.

This blog is where Gail shares her current client work and don’t be
surprised to find plenty of personal antecedotes on here as well.
Because when it comes to her life, Gail’s pretty much an open book. And
speaking of books, well, she loves those too. And her husband. And her
dog. So stick around and find out what else she likes or head over to www.gailwernerphoto.com to take a peek at her portfolio. Want to get a hold of her? E-mail Gail at gail@gailwernerphoto.com.

And just for the record, Gail also likes pina coladas but draws the line at getting caught in the rain.

Gail Werner is available for travel to any location.

30 Hours to Recharge

They say the first step in treating an addiction is self-admission, right? Well if that’s true, here goes Internet: I AM ADDICTED TO MY PHOTOGRAPHY BUSINESS.

I’m fully aware this problem plagues ALL small business owners. And since I’m the full-admission type, I’m OK with being one of the ones who puts those seven words out there. I mean, really, how normal is it to be rinsing the soap out of your hair in the morning and thinking, “Well, I could offer a wedding album with THAT wedding package…” or twisting and turning at night with thoughts about your accountant and your lawyer keeping you from sweet dreams? NORMAL PEOPLE JUST DON’T DO THAT.

This is a down time of year for many photographers, but don’t let that fool you: Those of us vested in growing our businesses are like ants stockpiling food for winter. (Translation: Whereas we spend our summers shooting and editing, we spend our winters working to make the business side of things that much better for you—our clients—and for us, our sanity, and our loved ones who put up with us).

Just as I was beginning to wonder how I could afford myself a break to just, you know, have ONE HOUR OF MY EVENINGS not consumed with thoughts of my business, an e-mail hit my inbox from Sarah Petty of The Joy of Marketing. Sarah sent a note out to photographers encouraging us to make 2010 our best year ever and in it, recommended we set limits for ourselves as part of that mission. Here’s a snippet:

Do you ever feel like you are working ALL THE TIME? Brian Tracy, internationally acclaimed speaker and educator says to give yourself time to heal, like you would a wound. If you are hopping on your computer all weekend working a little here and there, it is like picking at a wound. He recommends having a 36 hour time frame EACH WEEK where you don’t work. That is how your engine recharges.

Sarah, here’s to taking your advice. For me, I’m aiming for 30 hours each week for myself. For my husband. For guilt-free Thursday nights spent watching The Office, Parks and Rec and 30 Rock. And for blissful Fridays spent with friends over long dinners or on dates with Nick or curled under a blanket with a book. OR FOR DOING WHATEVER I WANT THAT DOESN’T INVOLVED THE WORDS “PHOTOGRAPHY” and “BUSINESS”.

So it begins at 6 o’clock. TONIGHT. (and I’m typing this at 5:52 … working every minute ’til that self-imposed break can commence!) Wish me luck, ’cause I KNOWWWW I’m gonna need it. And if you want to join me and carve out 30 (or 36!) hours in your OWN week, go for it. Leave me a comment and I’ll be rooting for you as much as myself.

And because no post is a proper post on a photo blog without a photo, here’s a glimpse of what’s outside my back window on this cold January evening. Pretty isn’t it?

January 7, 2010 - 5:05 pm Michelle Sidles - OK! I'll join you. Thursday & Friday. Work Free. No reading business books. No thinking about marketing strategies. Are you going to blog? That might be the hardest for me. I guess I will allow PERSONAL blogs but no PHOTOGRAPHY blogs? Sounds fun. Thankfully it's only 3pm here. ;)

January 7, 2010 - 6:04 pm jess@studio3z - What exactly do you mean, "Normal people don't do that?" Really??! Sharing you same illness, I've been devising a plan similar to this, but hadn't yet decided what days to do yet....but, GO YOU!! I know you'll stick to it.

January 7, 2010 - 6:37 pm Tina - Wait - some people actually go 36 hours straight without working??? I haven't done that since I started this photography business....guess I should make that a point this year! And I hear ya on thinking about it CONSTANTLY - doing laundry? Yep, thinking about photography. Driving? Yep, thinking about photography. Getting ready for work? Yep, thinking about photography. Whew - I think I'll join you and make nights for myself!

January 7, 2010 - 7:26 pm Vicki - How funny that I have Sarah's emails sitting in my inbox waiting to be read. I've wanted to take a day off from my business one day a week (I have a day job, so I can't take off 30 hours in a row unless it's the weekend), but now I might have to consider two days! It's so hard to turn off your brain to business ideas. :) Sounds like Thursdays and Fridays will be perfect for you. Good luck!

January 7, 2010 - 7:33 pm Char - Oh, how to hear nice I am not the only one losing my mind to business! :) I came across your site from Show it and like peeking in to see what you are up to! Love your stuff...keep it up!

January 7, 2010 - 8:31 pm Betsy - BUT WHEN WILL ALL THE WORK GET DONE!?!?! Some one help me!!!! ; )

January 7, 2010 - 9:58 pm Pol - Gorgeous shot! You are right, photography does seem to gobble up time. With three kids, studying, the house, practising, photography ... there just never seems to be enough time for everything. I think I need to start scheduling a bit

January 7, 2010 - 10:00 pm courtney - Hmmmmm....I'd like to say I'll jump on the bandwagon with you here....but I don't know if I can do it! But I'll sure try! :) And by the way, I think that picture is GORGEOUS. Taken with your 50mm 1.2?

January 8, 2010 - 6:26 am Kim - Amen to that! I say that as I sit here in Riyadh, across the kitchen table from John. We are both CONSTANTLY at our laptops working – seriously 24/7. It is never ending. I just pitched the 36 hour rule to him (or even 30 would be great!) and he seems keen. Fingers crossed! ;-)

January 8, 2010 - 2:35 pm Kerri Banyas - Good for you! I too am obsessed with my biz, but this year I have realized that taking a step back and focusing more on some other things (like my hubby and my kids) is going to be much more rewarding and also help me to become an even better business owner :) Letting go gives us so much more freedom!

January 8, 2010 - 5:36 pm Amber Fox - Reading this brought tears to my eyes. It is so easy to get overwhelmed by all the things we do for our business to make it successful. But our business is not a success if the important people in our lives are not being loved and cared for, because we are too busy capturing other peoples love. I pray that you really enjoy your 36 hours of pure bliss. Go you!

January 11, 2010 - 8:09 am Christine - Hahaha I'll trade you? I find it all too easy to get addicted to a book and spend a ton of time reading when I should be working on my to-do list. My goal this year is to work more and have less personal time. lol.

January 12, 2010 - 5:40 pm Adrienne Gunde - So wonderfully written and an inspirational read! Carving out more time to relax and recharge is a huge goal for me in 2010 and 30 hours is a great place to start! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

January 14, 2010 - 8:07 am Maya Laurent - Amen girl! Yikes, 30 hours, need to figure that one out! It makes complete sense but for some reason I can't make my mind stop and jump onto that computer one more time. Ugh!!!

January 18, 2010 - 4:27 pm Jenna Unruh - Gail, I stumbled on your blog through Betsy King's and thoroughly enjoy it. Thanks for this beautiful post. It is difficult to separate our business from ourselves, isn't it? I'm expecting a baby any week now and am trying to figure out how I'll balance my passion for my work (and time!) with a new baby. Love your blog! Keep up the good work! (glad to know of another Thursday night NBC lover! Can't get enough 30 Rock!)

January 19, 2010 - 2:25 am Sarah - I totally get it. I am starting my business this year and it completely consumes me! Every moment and especially during the moments where I am supposed to be doing something else. I am in the last week of writing my bachelor thesis and then I am free! Free to think about my business in the shower, at night, during breakfast, etc... Good luck on your 30 free hours :) xo from Germany
