I don't think anyone has mentioned this, but if you have the time in Paris:

Normandy beaches. So breathtaking and humbling. You can find some awesome day tours via bus.

Bruges, Belgium. One of my most favorite cities in the WORLD! (Next to Paris and DC). I promise you will not regret going. You can take the train (about 3 hours total) but again, I promise you won't regret going. Perhaps you could even find a little bed and breakfast to stay in there. It is a very medieval city, full of amazing color, cobblestone streets, narrow roads, yummy chocolate and Belgian fries. Yum. You'll love it!

Def' hit up a theatre show in the West End in London. Maybe you'll wanna splurge on entering into Westminster Abbey (Dickens and others lie there, at Poets' Corner), but I didn't. Take in the Colosseum in Rome, yes, but also go to Pantheon, for sure. (Watching the film Angels & Demons a few months ago reignited my love for Rome - despite 4 years of French language instruction, I liked London and Rome more than Paris in summer '08. Think it had to do with where we stayed.) Look out for ridiculous gypsy junk-sellers and pickpockets around Le Tour Eiffel. Window-shop along the Champs-Elysees. Could go on - check out my photo albums on FB, if you like, for ideas, and also most definitely check out the Vatican. Even for non-Catholics it is a stirring, magnificent place, St. Peter's Square and the Basilica and - oh my - that art at Museo Vaticano. The Sistine Chapel, anyone? And there's so much more. It's like a smaller Louvre.

hey gail! I found your site through the comments you have made on Katie Beverley's blog and I think you are amazing! I have some tips for you: In Paris - if you plan on going to the Eiffel Tower it will take up a few hours. I'm not sure when you're going but I went in March and we waited in line for about an hour to get to the ticket counter and then there was even more waiting on each level to get to the top (and down). The view was def worth it, though! Take the metro to get around. It will save you money and it's such a great experience! Watch out for gypsys. You can spot them a mile away (long flowing skirts, travel in groups, only women in children). No matter what DO NOT talk with them if they come up to you. I know it's so hard not to help but believe me they don't need help they are master scam artist. A gypsy came up to my mother with a postcard asking her to read what it said and while my mom was helping her a younger girl was picking through her purse. I saw the girl and they didn't get anything but just beware! You absolutely must go to Montmatre where Sacré-Cœur is. Walk the stairs, it's more fun and explore the neighborhood. Be careful though, because there are a group of people at the bottom of Montmatre who want to braid you a bracelet. They say if you like it then yo can pay them. They're lying. They braid the bracelet on your wrist which keeps you tethered to them and then won't let you go until you pay them what they think is enough. I know I keep telling you the bad things but really Paris is lovely and wonderful as long as you know how to stay safe and kept from getting scammed. Oh and finally, Versailles is a MUST! If you go in the summer go on a Sunday. That is the only day they have the fountains going. I didn't go on a Sunday but I could only imagine how much more incredible it would have been! I would def spend an entire day there. You can explore the neighborhood surrounding Versailles forever and the grounds of Versailles is so expansive and beautiful it's worth taking your time. Can't wait for you to go and I bet you will have some AMAZING photographs!
