Gail Werner Photography bio picture

Welcome to my Blog!

Gail Werner is a central Indiana wedding and portrait photographer.
Here’s where she tells you she likes the feel of the ocean and the
taste of champagne. Oh wait …

Truth is, she does love the ocean (when she can make it to a
coast!), but what she loves more is documenting the lives of her
clients — big days, little moments, they all carry meaning and deserve
to be captured.

This blog is where Gail shares her current client work and don’t be
surprised to find plenty of personal antecedotes on here as well.
Because when it comes to her life, Gail’s pretty much an open book. And
speaking of books, well, she loves those too. And her husband. And her
dog. So stick around and find out what else she likes or head over to www.gailwernerphoto.com to take a peek at her portfolio. Want to get a hold of her? E-mail Gail at gail@gailwernerphoto.com.

And just for the record, Gail also likes pina coladas but draws the line at getting caught in the rain.

Gail Werner is available for travel to any location.

March Self-Portrait: (or how) Cooking Calms Me Down

When I was 20, I thought cooking was what I was doing when I made Shake & Bake chicken and Rice-a-Roni for Nick and I’s first meal. In a house he shared with five other guys. (No visual cues needed for the state of that kitchen).

Eight years later and I’ve discovered what it truly means to cook a meal. To leave your mind on the other side of the table so you can hover over a counter to mince vegetables and herbs and measure spices and press garlic in peace. Who needs a therapist when you can have a cutting board?

I’m OCD in my kitchen (which has, if you notice, foam green metal cabinets—an original ’50s throw-back to our house that promptly helped us fall in love with it). When I’m responsible for a meal, I line up all my prep bowls just so, wipe down the counters between every task and read the recipe three times before I begin. It’s why, as much as I wish I could, I’d never be good as a professional chef. Or as a contestant on Hell’s Kitchen. But hey, a girl can daydream and sometimes, this is what she dreams about …

In my house, I’m in charge of what graces the dinner table. And to me, that’s the best part about cooking: Treating it more like a culinary adventure and less like a chore. So who’s coming over for dinner next? :)

Here’s a few must-haves for the Werner kitchen. Got any kitchen goodies you can’t live without that you want to share? Hit me up in the comments. ‘Cause I can talk about food, food prep and the merits of having a garbage bowl Rachel-Ray style any time :)

1) A great set of knives: We got this set of Henckels knives when we got married and they get used every day (sometimes to cut stuff not intended..ahem). If you want to get serious in the kitchen, having a good quality set of knives is essential (so, yeah, buying ‘em at Wal-Mart probably isn’t going to cut it. No, really, I mean that. Literally.)

2) Garlic press: Here’s the thing—do you NEED a garlic press? No. But owning one of these means you’re using fresh garlic in your food. Which means you’re cooking real, authentic food. Food that tastes good. And that makes you feel that much closer to Mario Batali (is there anyone else out there who has this on their Netflix the way I do? HA!)

3) Fresh lemons: This kind of comes back to Number 2. Having fresh lemons in the house brings zest to the kitchen. It’s like, you know how you feel better if you wear something nice outta the closet? Something a little peppier than the norm that, heck, maybe you even ironed first? Well, consider lemons that zippy addition to your kitchen’s wardrobe.

4) A good can opener: Okay, so let me tell you I’ve tried this both ways. Electric and with a $4 jobbie, and neither one stood up to the test of time. Until my friend Joy (who bought me that awesome apron you see in this photo) introduced me to the Oxo can opener. No more lids in the can, no more tiring myself out in the process (cut me some slack, I’m a leftie and they don’t make these things for us!). This is the best out there. And you thought people didn’t have an opinion about these things!

5) Preparation bowls: You know what makes these handy little bowls (perfect for pooling together the spices and chopped veggies and herbs you might need) even better? THEY DOUBLE AS MEASURING CUPS. Ladies, if you’re looking for a gift for a gal, I assure you, this is that “thing” your girlfriend doesn’t know she needs but once she has, she’ll use every day and think of you :) Having these around instantly makes cooking more fun, I promise.

6) My subscription to Cooking Light: I swear on a stack of these ‘zines that I’ve yet to make a bad recipe out of one of ‘em. Yummy meals made with real ingredients that are, no joke, lick-your-plate good. Like, the first time I ever made this, I’m not even kidding those were the exact words out of Nick’s mouth. He may have even said ‘em with his mouth full :) $10 for the year? TOTALLY worth it. Even if you only make one meal a month from its pages.

March 18, 2010 - 9:29 pm jamiedelaine - you're cute. i will never be that way. my mom is still a shake n' bake chicken and rice in the rice cooker and peas in the microwave kind of cook. and it's easy and quick. haha. and we like it. BUT. i do love a wonderfully cooked meal... not enough to spend time on it though. hahah!

March 18, 2010 - 10:16 pm Melissa Jill :) - You're so stinkin' cute. I wish I could come over for dinner.

March 19, 2010 - 12:52 am Dustin Francis - I've been cooking a lot too...I will blogging my experiences too :) You have the same paper towel holder I do :)

March 19, 2010 - 2:37 am Carrie Bugg Photography - Hi Gail - love your blog - I have that can opener - it's great isn't it?!!

March 19, 2010 - 5:47 am Erin - ok, this is fantastic, gail - you hit the nail on the head with your must-have list, for sure! i could leave a million comments on this post, but i'll try not to take up too much space and stick with two :) - lemons: couldn't agree more; i think they are a beautiful and inexpensive decoration, too. if you love fresh flowers, like me, lemons are an economical alternative with dual purpose. let them spruce up your dining table or kitchen counter for a few days and then juice (or zest) away! prep bowls: YES! mise en place bowls are my favorite and you're totally right - they are SO much fun...and pretty...and make you feel more 'fancy' in the kitchen. ;) SO wish we could come over for dinner. (or cook together, or that matter :)

March 19, 2010 - 6:48 am j.ro - beautiful! and you're right, those cabinets rock!

March 19, 2010 - 6:49 am j.ro - and p.s. since meals that come from a box are still a staple in my house, i'm sure all my boys would love to come over your house for dinner sometime ;o)

March 19, 2010 - 7:09 am Leah - Along with Cooking Light, another great magazine for very simple (most recipes only have around 5 ingredients) great tasting meals is Kraft Food and Family. I wouldn't cook nearly as much as I do if I didn't have this magazine!

March 19, 2010 - 8:50 am Brandi - Neat photo. I love to cook and I love kitchen gadgets. I will love to cook even more after we finally get a kitchen makeover!

March 19, 2010 - 9:38 am Tira J - You are so adorable! Kitchen Aide Mixer!

March 19, 2010 - 3:24 pm Maya Laurent - I WANT your cabinets!!! I might come to your house late at night to take them out. Think you'll notice??? :) And...you are gorgeous!

March 19, 2010 - 10:30 pm Betsy - No Sh**, those bowls double as measuring cups? YES PLEASE! Great post! I wish I could enjoy cooking. Ugh....

March 19, 2010 - 10:31 pm Betsy - Oh and yes, Kitchen Aid Mixer!!! I need to find a better pancake pan too. Any suggestions? What pots do you use?

March 20, 2010 - 2:14 am Jessica S. - I completely disagree about the garlic press! I NEED one, no two ways about it. Chopping garlic is pretty much the worst thing in the world. I would marry my garlic press if they just made it legal.

March 20, 2010 - 12:39 pm jess@studio3z - you're so cute :) and I flipping love your kitchen. I'm with you on the garlic and lemons...two essentials in our cooking. Also for us, olive and coconut oil are up there on the essentials list. Maybe sometime you and Brett can have a "kitchen/cook chat." That's such a passion for him. I keep telling him to start a cooking blog. :)

March 21, 2010 - 10:36 pm gwyneth colleen - my pampered chef garlic press is one of the most oft-used and definitely most-beloved items in my kitchen. i don't think it's overstating it to say it has changed my life.

March 22, 2010 - 10:33 am T3 - I liked this post so much I have forwarded it to several friends. You are absolutely spot on about fresh lemons in the house bringing "zest to the kitchen." Where we live we don't have ready access to fresh lemons, so I order them online at http://www.buy-lemons-online.com/ which is as good as fresh because they pick them right off the tree and ship direct. What do you think of Sweet Meyer Lemons? Thank you very much, T3

March 22, 2010 - 11:56 am melanie - for a second i thought you were doing a tribute to the movie 'julie and julia'. good movie. i can totally see you pulling something off like that! can i come over early for dinner to get lessons first? damn, i thought rice a roni was cookin. the essential in my kitchen is cheese. its in everything i cook. :)

March 24, 2010 - 9:12 am Michelle Sidles - Eek! I'm getting all comment crazy but you are posting such great stuff I just have to reply. ;) I love the Selfie! Totally perfect! And couldn't agree more about the Henkels knives. I also just bought that garlic press a few weeks ago and love it. And lastly, I bought a Meyer Lemon tree that is growing INSIDE my house (since I live in WA state and it's COLD outside). We know have fresh home grown lemons!! Woot! Keep cooking Gail! :)

March 24, 2010 - 9:32 pm Ellen - ok, I read this a few days ago on my blog reader but the picture didn't show up. . . seeing it right now I got a lump in my throat because you look SO MUCH like your mom!

March 25, 2010 - 7:59 am Kim - You are spot on with the kitchen essentials! I have great knives (plus an assortment of wood and plastic cutting boards too), a garlic press with a great little brush attached to clean out the holes, and the Pampered Chef can opener equivalent to yours. I love them all!! I don't think there is anything else to add except perhaps my Pyrex glass measuring cup(s) and my heavy dry measuring cups too. They are life savers which keep me from guesstamating!! LOL

August 19, 2010 - 5:00 pm sockeye salmon ordering - What do you recommend as the best garlic mincer? Karlyn Sue
