Gail Werner Photography bio picture

Welcome to my Blog!

Gail Werner is a central Indiana wedding and portrait photographer.
Here’s where she tells you she likes the feel of the ocean and the
taste of champagne. Oh wait …

Truth is, she does love the ocean (when she can make it to a
coast!), but what she loves more is documenting the lives of her
clients — big days, little moments, they all carry meaning and deserve
to be captured.

This blog is where Gail shares her current client work and don’t be
surprised to find plenty of personal antecedotes on here as well.
Because when it comes to her life, Gail’s pretty much an open book. And
speaking of books, well, she loves those too. And her husband. And her
dog. So stick around and find out what else she likes or head over to www.gailwernerphoto.com to take a peek at her portfolio. Want to get a hold of her? E-mail Gail at gail@gailwernerphoto.com.

And just for the record, Gail also likes pina coladas but draws the line at getting caught in the rain.

Gail Werner is available for travel to any location.

My 3 Favorite Presents

When you’re one half of a couple that’s been together for awhile (and will be together for the long haul), you know there are years you don’t make gift-giving magic happen with one another. With Nick and I, at least we still get one another gifts. I know a lot of my friends who, once in a committed relationship, stop doing it all together.

That makes me sad for them. I think it’s because, even though I tell myself material things from him don’t matter, getting a gift from Nick (even if I happen to know what it’ll be) is so awesome. I get to see him smile big when I open it. I get to tell him I love it when he worriedly asks me if he did OK. And somewhere in the process of it, I fall in love with him all over again.

Here are the three best Christmas gifts Nick has given me in our 8 years together. I’m not saying he’s a perfect present-giver (we’ve each had our “Oh crap – I forgot to get you something and there’s only a week left ’til your birthday/Xmas/anniversary” moments for sure), but these three cherished items are proof of how much my husband loves me. And whenever I look at them, I fall in love with him all over again.

MY GUITAR:  When we first got together, I spotted a “Learn How to Play Guitar” book on Nick’s bookshelf and shared with him that I played piano and always wanted to learn guitar. Three years later, we’re opening presents and I open up my last one to discover that old book. “What’s this?” “This is one of your old books, right?” His response: “Well yeah, but your real present is out in the garage.” I ran shrieking outside to spot this beautiful instrument waiting for me. I’ve taken some lessons since then and still can’t play all that well, but I LOVE my guitar and I’ll never forget this Christmas as the one where Nick made me feel like a little kid again.

MY FAVORITE PAINTING: My first visit to Nick’s home in Brown County, Ind., we spent the day hiking and walking around the town of Nashville. For the unfamiliar, Brown County is a mecca for Hoosier artists and so we spent some time at Nashville’s art gallery, buying a print from an Indiana artist named Dean Davis. A few years later, Nick and his dad DROVE TO EVANSVILLE (a six hour drive from Muncie) to visit Dean in person at his home studio, where Nick bought me an original painting of his. My jaw dropped the Christmas he gifted it to me, but it was the story behind the present — how much effort he went to get it for me — that will always make this the piece of art the most valuable in our home.

MY ANTIQUE TYPEWRITERS: Nick gave me these back in ‘05. I had mentioned to him that, with us being writers and all (we were both journalists at the time and he still is), it’d be cool to have something antique-y to pay homage to the craft. He snatched two for me on eBay, one of which had a sweet note inside he’d typed using the typewriter. Proof it still worked and, to me, the best part about the whole gift :)

December 22, 2009 - 8:22 am Christine - Aww Gail these are so sweet! I LOVE the typewriter. When I get my office I want some old film cameras to use as book stoppers :) My BF and I have only been together for a little over a year and a half so we have only spent last Christmas together so far but he got me the sweetest gift. He bought a photo cube from a local craft store and put photos of us and our cat in it. When I opened it he asked me if I wanted to see how to open the cube to change the photos. I said sure and when I opened the cube there was a tiny box with a ring inside :) No it wasn't an engagement ring, but it's still beautiful. Just a tiny white gold ring with a heart and a few small diamonds on the front. Merry Christmas!

December 22, 2009 - 11:12 am erin - one of my favorite gifts of all time that i received from erik was for our first christmas together. we both share swedish roots and to celebrate this he presented me with a beautiful hand painted dalahäst, or a dala horse. i knew he had gone out of his way to fnd such a beautifully painted piece and had come up with the idea months in advance, which made the gift all the more special. :) erik really is one of the best gift-givers i know - and it sounds like you have a pretty good one, as well! :) merry christmas gail!

December 23, 2009 - 9:27 am Chanel - This is the CUTEST post ever! How sweet! It's married couples like you two that give me hope! It's so refreshing to see this!

December 23, 2009 - 11:02 am Amanda - Such a sweet post! - I spent most of 2002 oogling over a gorgeous blouse at a little boutique in Birmingham. I was in college at the time and it was too expensive for my measly part-time salary. It went on sale right before Christmas, so I splurged and bought it. I was so excited to tell my boyfriend (now husband) all about the deal I scored. He calmly went into the other room and returned with a gift. It was still a few days before Christmas, but he made me open it. It was the same blouse! He had picked out the perfect gift, and I went and ruined it. I felt horrible about it, but I learned my lesson about shopping for myself before Christmas!

December 23, 2009 - 11:14 am Gail - Amanda, I love your comment because it so reminds me of one of my favorite short stories. I had to read this in middle school and I have never ever forgotten it: O. Henry's Gift of the Magi http://www.online-literature.com/o_henry/1014/

December 23, 2009 - 5:20 pm Michelle Sidles - Gail! Thanks for the tip about Over the Rhine! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! :) I was playing my Sufjan Christmas album when we had friends over the other night. Of the WHOLE group (6 people) I think I was the only one who "got" it. They must be old... or very uncool. :P haha!!
