I get that — just like real life — there is a seedy side to the Internet. The side you hear about on specials like Dateline or when your cousin sends you that chain letter about how they know someone who knows someone who got scammed by this one person who SAID she was collecting money for 9/11 victims but really was in a cubicle farm in some foreign country bilking you out of $50 in hard-earned cash.
When it comes to THAT side of the Internet? Well, it’s my prerogative to remain blissfully unaware. Because in the cyberworld I frequent, there’s nothing but happy people. Who say and do nice things, all the time. And are crazy creative (did I mention how much I love sites like www.etsy.com?)
These are the people who blow me away at how much they (like me) want to connect with other like-minded people courtesy of the world wide web (I get that people haven’t called it that since 1994 too… cut me some slack, ‘kay?)
Back to this “puppies and rainbows” corner of the Internet: I recently had another fabulous first-hand experience when I tried hunting down the debut album of an up-and-coming Australian band, Little Red. I found one of their songs online (“Coca Cola”) and fell in love with it. Then spent a solid 30 minutes trying to find how I could buy it (also online). My attempts were to no avail so in an act of desperation, I headed over to OSP (photographers, if you aren’t on OSP, what are you waiting for?), posting a message along the likes of “I’m dying to buy this album — any Aussie or New Zealand photographers out there willing to help me out?”
Within 24 hours, a happy dance in my chair ensued when the lovely Adelina from New Zealand sent me an e-mail letting me know that she’d paid a visit to the Aussie iTunes and snagged the album for me. FOR REAL IS THAT NOT THE NICEST THING? So I’ve been listening to the songs all week with a big smile on my face. ‘Cause to me, this is what the Internet is ALL about. Bringing people together, one modern-day doo-wop song at a time.
Thanks again Adelina! And if you wanna take a listen to the Little Red song that got ME hooked, just hit play below — I think it’s PERFECT for these last days of summer!
