Gail Werner Photography bio picture

Welcome to my Blog!

Gail Werner is a central Indiana wedding and portrait photographer.
Here’s where she tells you she likes the feel of the ocean and the
taste of champagne. Oh wait …

Truth is, she does love the ocean (when she can make it to a
coast!), but what she loves more is documenting the lives of her
clients — big days, little moments, they all carry meaning and deserve
to be captured.

This blog is where Gail shares her current client work and don’t be
surprised to find plenty of personal antecedotes on here as well.
Because when it comes to her life, Gail’s pretty much an open book. And
speaking of books, well, she loves those too. And her husband. And her
dog. So stick around and find out what else she likes or head over to www.gailwernerphoto.com to take a peek at her portfolio. Want to get a hold of her? E-mail Gail at gail@gailwernerphoto.com.

And just for the record, Gail also likes pina coladas but draws the line at getting caught in the rain.

Gail Werner is available for travel to any location.

Why buying camera equipment is like adopting a dog

About two weeks ago, I darn near gave my local FedEx man a hug. Why? BECAUSE HE HAD JUST DROPPED OFF MY 50 1.2 LENS! People I have coveted this lens for so long actually having it in my possession is probably not unlike how the Grinch felt finally holding all those presents from Whoville in his hands. (Too late on that Xmas reference, was I?)

When BorrowLens.com tweeted about their annual sale of gear, I knew this would be my one chance to snatch up this lens at a discounted price. So I did. What’s that old line, “Think long, think wrong?” I didn’t think, I just clicked and clicked some more and in minutes, I had me a new lens! (and needed a paper bag to hyperventilate in at the cost).

Once in my posession, what did I start taking pictures of first? Miss Daisy of course. The more I fired away, the more I got to thinking about how purchasing some expensive piece of equipment is not unlike adopting a pet.

Consider the cost.

RATIONALIZING A DOG: Can we afford this? Probably not. But she’s so cute! Let’s get her.

RATIONALIZING A PIECE OF EQUIPMENT: Can I afford this? Probably not. But that bokeh..those megapixels..I can’t resist. I’m gonna get it.

Then the anxiety.

FREAKING OUT OVER THE DOG: Are you kidding me? She destroyed 3 coffee table books, a box set of DVDs and had five accidents in the house and was only loose from her cage for FIVE MINUTES? FOR THE LOVE. I think we made a mistake. We DEFINITELY made a mistake. Can we take her back?

FREAKING OUT OVER EQUIPMENT: For real? I worked how many hours to pay for this thing? I mean, it’s really just some plastic and metal right? It’s not REALLY better than what I was using before right? I think I made a mistake. If I send it now, I think I can take it back.

Followed by the good stuff.

FALLING IN LOVE WITH A DOG: Just look at her … seriously, HOW did I live without her?

FALLING IN LOVE WITH A PIECE OF EQUIPMENT: Just look at these images. HOW did I function in my business without this?

So here’s to my new lens and the fond feelings I’m already adopting for it. Before too long, like the way I feel about my pup, I know I’ll wonder how I lived without this baby. In the meantime, it’s gotta start earning her keep (the lens … not the dog, folks).

And if you’ve got a piece of equipment you felt this way about or continue to covet (like me and the 35 1.4 :) ), feel free to chime in on the comments!

December 30, 2009 - 6:17 pm kaila - yes, yes, yes- I remember the day the 50 1.2 arrived at my doorstep... I cannot imagine living without it... now only if I could get the 35 1.4... I am right there with you!

December 30, 2009 - 6:42 pm Tina - Haha yup, you're right on this one! And just like you're coveting the 35mm 1.4, I am coveting your 50mm 1.2 - when are you going to post some images using the new lens?? I can't wait to see!!

December 30, 2009 - 7:31 pm Betsy - This is HILARIOUS and SOOOO true. Um, girlfriend, I just made the mother of all B&H orders today. I'm not sure if this is pregnancy nausea or purchasing panic. I have a secret btw....... ; )

December 30, 2009 - 7:37 pm Michelle Sidles - Lordy! I had never considered buying from borrow lenses as an option! This is so exciting!!! Must remember for next year. :) AND CONGRATULATIONS on your new bundle of joy!! I can relate to the camera gear love!! :)

December 30, 2009 - 8:23 pm Betsy Jo - I found your blog from Betsy King's awhile back. I enjoy your photos and fresh look, but have never commented until now. With this post, I couldn't resist! --I have big ideas about getting the 1.2 this Spring... time will tell. Your work is beautiful!

December 30, 2009 - 9:11 pm Melody - You make me smile... ;) So glad you got yourself a 50/1.2...you'll love it!

December 30, 2009 - 9:14 pm Brandi - MMMM 50 1.2... I'd be drooling too. I actually just upgraded to the 1.4.. someday I'll be at the 1.2 as well :)

December 30, 2009 - 9:20 pm Michelle Davies - I coveted, drooled and hyperventilated over the 70-200L 2.8 IS. And I have never regretted ordering it. It is my absolutely favorite lens in the bag. Congrats on the new baby! Oh, and the 35mm? I'm eyeing it myself ;)

December 30, 2009 - 9:37 pm Maya Laurent - Ha ha ha! I'm about ready to purchase some stuff too and yikes it makes you feel like you've lost an arm. But it's almost always worth it! And Betsy...what's with the secret? :)

December 31, 2009 - 9:38 am Mike Wise - Congrats Gail. Just be careful because now you are going to want the 85L...the 24L...the 35L...and the 135L. I am eyeing the 200L, but can't pull the trigger. Happy new year! :)

December 31, 2009 - 10:32 am Amanda - I'd also compare it to having a new (human) baby. You are a proud mama who wants to show it to everyone, you are extra careful to not bump it into things, you carefully watch others who are holding it, and you don't put it down for the first few days. Congrats!

December 31, 2009 - 7:26 pm erin - love the shot of the pup! :) can't wait to see what beautiful shots you come up with using this new lens...HOW EXCITING!!! :)

January 2, 2010 - 12:11 am Cat Hoffman - I love my 35 1.4 too! It was just about all I used for Christmas and New Years with the family, and I'd dare say I take at least 60% of all my wedding photos with that lens too.

January 2, 2010 - 4:30 am Emma in London - What an awesome lens and cool pressie for you! Can't wait to see more of your work with it.

January 2, 2010 - 6:29 am Lissette Q - I feel you! I bought the 85mm/1.2L in September, the 5D Mark ii in October, the 50mm/1.2L in November and the 35mm/1.4L a week before Christmas. Oops, I forgot the 3 pocketwizards and new softboxes. I am the happiest camper in the world even though I cringe each month when my American Express bill arrives. I justify it by thinking of all the miles I am accumulating. Ha!

January 13, 2010 - 2:32 pm j.ro - super fun! good for you!

February 6, 2010 - 8:13 pm Christen - just got the 50mm 1.4 and I am honestly kicking myself for not getting this before the last three events I have shot... stupid, stupid, stupid... it is a beautiful piece of glass, why did i wait so long to buy such an affordable lens??
